The Gulit Project is a research and development initiative focusing on urban resilience through food preservation strategies in the markets of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Working side-by-side with local citizens, market vendors and sustainability organizations, our goal is implement new methods in clay based construction to showcase the importance in food security and to help reduce food waste across the city.

From March 21-25, IDEO held a bootcamp for all grant winners in Nairobi, Kenya. Melat and Julia attended the event on behalf of the team and spent the week sharing our project and learning new skills in human centre design.

It was an intense week where each project representative spent day and night working exploring new ways to improve as well as define their implementation strategies.

Here are some of the question we asked ourselves to help push the Gulit Project.

//

Problem statement.

  • vendors don’t cooperate for transport, delivery etc.
  • vendors throw away large amount of fruits

  • vendors are dependent on seasonal

Due to the lack of appropriate food preservation and recycling methods, local fruit and vegetable market vendors are directly affected by climate change and price fluctuation.

Idea

  • preserve food to increase variety
  • preserve food to elongate shelf life
  • preserve food to increase market value
  • preserve food to
  • lower individual costs  for transportation
